Book Review- “The World We Live In” by Jamell Crouthers

Subtitled “A Poetry Book on Societal Issues”, this book is a series of poems, each with a different character facing a different struggle. Identified by first name only (you aren’t told the race of the person) each character narrates their story in an intimate and conversational tone. Issues such as addiction, stalking, sexual assault and gender identity are tackled in this honest and emotionally sensitive collection. The author did a great job of conveying the very personal struggles people face today. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone walked away less judgmental? Recommended for those who like thought-provoking reads. Disclaimer– I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review— The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly

I loved this book! An epic saga packed with a love story, murder, revenge, success and heartache. Beautifully written characters that travel from London to America and back in the 1880’s. Fiona’s struggles and accomplishments will keep you interested and wanting more. My friend lent me this book and I put it off because of the length but I was sad to see it end! I can’t wait to read the next book in the trilogy, “The Winter Rose”. “The Tea Rose” is a must-read. Highly recommended!!!

Book Review- “In Her Words” by J. S. Ellis

What is real and what is imagined? Sophie is married to a wealthy, loving man living what should be a happy life but it’s not even close to being enough. As you’ll see “In Her Own Words” sometimes we fool ourselves into believing the best — or worst — in people. Told through Sophie’s diary journals this is a creepy yet suspenseful ride. Many of the characters are incredibly unlikeable, especially Sophie, an alcoholic intent on sabotaging her life with bad choice after bad choice. In spite of that, this manages to be an enjoyable, fast-paced read until the bitter end. Take it to the beach or on your summer vacation and be prepared to feel uncomfortable!! Book Review — “Beyond the Shadow of Night” by Ray Kingfisher

Two childhood friends’ lives are torn in separate directions by events of the Second World War only to be reunited years later. The years of suffering and shame haunt them throughout their lives in this beautifully written novel. Alternating between present-day and flashbacks, this story and its characters will touch you and make you question guilt, forgiveness, cruelty and friendship. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Highly recommend!!! #BeyondTheShadowOfNight #NetGalley
